How to Avoid the Crowds in Avignon: Hours, Days and Quiet Corners

Avignon is a small city with one famous door, and most visitors try to walk through it at the same hour. You can do better on your own with a little timing. This guide shows when the palace and the bridge open, which days and months fill the old town, where to park outside the walls, and which tours leave early. When you are ready to commit to a date, make your Avignon reservation once the hours below are in your diary.

When is Avignon busiest?

In July. The Festival d'Avignon and the OFF festival run together, from 4 to 25 July in 2026, and the old town is full from morning to midnight. Rue des Teinturiers, quiet the rest of the year, becomes the busiest street in the city.

Winter is the calm season: the palace opens at 10 am from November, and the tourist office closes most Sundays.

What time should you reach the palace?

At opening. From 1 March to 1 November the Palais des Papes opens at 9 am, and in winter at 10 am. Arrive ten minutes early and you are among the first through the door.

The last hour is the other good slot, but it is short. Last admission is an hour before closing, and the visit takes about two hours, so a late start means rushing the upper rooms.

Should you book the palace online?

Yes. The palace recommends it, and a ticket bought ahead saves you buying one at the desk. The combined ticket with the bridge, €19.50, is valid that day and the next, so you can buy once and split the two visits across two quiet mornings.

The step-free route from 1 October must be booked ahead too. It runs on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 am to noon and on Sundays from 2:30 pm, free for a wheelchair user and one companion.

When should you walk the bridge?

Early, or on the second morning of your combined ticket. The Pont Saint-Bénézet keeps the palace's seasons, and last access is 30 minutes before closing. The visit takes about 35 minutes.

If the bridge itself is crowded, see it from the Rocher des Doms instead. The garden sits 30 m above the river and costs nothing.

How do you get through July?

Plan round the festival rather than against it. Do the palace at 9 am, leave the city in the afternoon on a day out or a wine tour, and come back for the evening shows. Book beds and tours as soon as your dates are fixed.

Which corners stay quiet?

The places a few streets away from the palace square. Walk a stretch of the ramparts, 4.3 km of wall, or take the free shuttle boat from Quai de la Ligne to the Île de la Barthelasse, 700 hectares of orchards and riverbank between the two arms of the Rhône.

In town, the back streets round Place Saint-Didier and the old Jewish quarter feel a long way from the queues. A guide finds them for you: the post-office walk makes twelve short stops in two hours, from $40.

Where do you park without circling the walls?

Outside them. Car access to the centre is restricted after 11 am, and the orange zone inside the walls allows four hours at most. The park-and-ride at Italiens has 1,454 free spaces and a free shuttle, and Piot has 1,100 with another.

Which tours leave early?

The ProVans villages days leave the central post office at 8:45 am. The highlights day and the Luberon half day leave the tourist office at 9 am, and the full wine day leaves rue de Mons at 9:30. An early start gets you to the first village in the cool of the morning, and back in town for a late walk.

Is the afternoon the time to leave town?

In summer, yes. July averages 31.5 °C by day at Avignon, with about 22 days at 30 °C or more, and the palace is neither air-conditioned nor heated. The afternoon wine tour leaves at 2 pm and brings you back around 6 pm, in time for the evening.

Is winter the quiet season?

Yes, and the monuments stay open. The palace and the bridge open every day of the year, from 10 am to 5 pm in the quietest weeks. From 1 November the tourist office opens Monday to Saturday, with most Sundays closed.

What about Sundays and Mondays?

They catch people out. Les Halles is closed on Mondays and open to 3 pm from Friday to Sunday. Notre-Dame des Doms closes on Mondays from 1 October, and over lunch on the other days. The palace and the bridge open every day.

So keep Monday for the palace, the ramparts and a day out, and give the market a weekday morning. From November the tourist office also closes on most Sundays, so collect your maps and your festival questions on a weekday.

Is a guided walk quieter than going alone?

It can be, because a good guide takes you where the crowd does not go. The post-office walk caps its group at 15, the walk with the palace ticket at 16, and the history walk at 25, with whisper-box audio so you hear the guide without anyone raising a voice. The private walk is your party alone.

Where should you stay to be first at the palace?

Anywhere inside the walls works. Even from Avignon Centre station the palace is about 15 minutes on foot, so a bed at the station end puts you at the door for opening. That end is also where most day tours leave, from the tourist office on cours Jean Jaurès.

How do you make the palace visit feel calmer?

Use the palace's own tools. The Histopad tablet is free at the entrance, in seven languages, and the Clefs du Palais web app covers the new route on the palace's own Wi-Fi, with nothing to download. You move at your own pace instead of following a group.

Leave the gardens for the end, but not too late: last entry to them is 30 minutes before the palace closes. Photos are allowed except in the painted rooms, so keep the phone away in the Chambre du Pape and the Chambre du Cerf.
