Visiting Avignon: Tickets, Hours and Getting Around

Avignon has no gate. You can walk the streets, the squares and the ramparts for free, and you pay only at the doors of the monuments. If you are looking at Avignon tickets, the prices below are the ones the monuments charge you at the door or online.

Two tickets cover most first visits. The Palais des Papes, the palace the popes built in the 14th century, costs €16. The Pont Saint-Bénézet, the bridge that stops halfway across the Rhône, costs €6. Buy both together and you pay €19.50.

Avignon ticket prices

The palace changed its prices on 1 August 2026, so an older guidebook will be out. Children under 10 go free everywhere, and ages 10 to 17 pay a youth rate. The combined ticket is valid that day and the next, with one entry to each site, so you can split the two visits.

The City Pass also covers the Fort Saint-André across the river, the Louis Vouland Museum, the Lambert Collection and the Jean Vilar Centre. It starts the first time you use it and runs for 24 or 48 hours in a row. You can add bus and tram travel or a parking discount when you buy it online. Avignon residents get into the palace free on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with proof of address.

Opening hours by season

The palace and the bridge open every day of the year. The summer season is the long one: 9 am to 7 pm from 1 March to 1 November. In winter both close at 5 pm or 6 pm.

Last admission to the palace is an hour before closing, and the bridge's last access is 30 minutes before. Plan about two hours inside the palace and 35 minutes on the bridge. The palace advises you to book online, and a weekday morning is the quietest time to walk in.

Which tours include a ticket

Most tours sell you the story, not the door. The walks show you the palace square, the cathedral and the back streets, and the ticket is yours to buy. A few fares are different.

The palace ticket

The 3.5-hour A la Française walk, from $80 a person, has the palace entrance ticket and a glass of Côtes du Rhône in its fare. No other fare here includes it, and some walks list it as extra.

The Roman aqueduct entry

The Provence Panorama best-of-Provence day and the A la Française Provence-in-one-day trip include the entry to the Pont du Gard; on the second the museum is extra. Walking onto the site is free, and what it charges for is parking and the museum.

The Van Gogh asylum

The A la Française Van Gogh half day includes the entrance to Saint-Paul de Mausole in Saint-Rémy.

No fare includes the bridge ticket. Some walks list it as extra, so budget €6 or the €19.50 combined ticket if you want to stand on it.

The tourist office

The Avignon tourist office is at 41 cours Jean Jaurès, inside the walls on the main street from the station. Call it on +33 4 32 74 32 74. From 1 April to 3 July and from 26 July to 31 October 2026 it opens Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm, and Sundays and holidays from 10 am to 5 pm.

From 1 November 2026 to the end of March 2027 the hours shorten. It opens Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. On Sundays in the school holidays it opens 10 am to 1 pm, and other Sundays it is closed. It closes on 25 December and 1 January. During the festival it becomes the Tourism and Festivals Office, and those weeks' hours differ.

The advisers speak French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin. Most minivan days start from the pavement outside its door, so it is worth finding on your first walk. Every kerb a tour leaves from is on the Avignon map.

Getting here and getting around

Avignon Centre station is a 2-minute walk from the walls and about 15 minutes on foot from the palace. The TGV station is 6 km out, and a regional shuttle train links it to the centre. The old town is small enough to cross on foot, and that is how you will see it. Access and comfort

• Stairs. The palace has many, and the classic route is partly closed to wheelchairs. A “parcours confort” route is offered instead.
• No air conditioning. The palace is neither air-conditioned nor heated. In July the average high is 31.5 °C, so carry water and go early.
• The bridge lift. A lift serves pushchairs and reduced mobility. Phone +33 4 32 74 32 74 before you go to check it is working.
• Bags and dogs. The bridge has a free, supervised left-luggage and takes dogs on a lead. The palace admits assistance dogs only.
• Photos. Allowed in the palace except in the three painted rooms.

When to come is its own question: the festival fills July, and the lavender flowers from mid-June. The best time to visit sets the months side by side.
